Design, like most things worth doing, is something you start practicing and never really stop.

Design Lessons with Tony

If there are skills you want to learn or areas of improvement your boss would like to see before you get that next promotion, 1 on 1 Designer Skills Training or "Design Lessons" may be for you. The 1 on 1 format allows us to go more in depth or at a different pace from a more formal class, while providing you with more accountability and motivation to keep progressing than trying to learn on your own.

What is it?

I was inspired to start teaching this way based on music lessons I've been taking off and on for most of my life. When I started to think about if it could apply to design I realized there wasn't really anything quite like it. More than mentorship, we will tackle actual skills (hard and soft) from diagramming complex ideas to presenting ideas, and everything in-between. We'll work together to build a learning plan that gets your where you want to go at your own pace. Sessions are 45 minutes each, online. We can meet either twice, or four times a month.

What will we do?

The first thing we'll do is discuss your goals. Then we'll set up a plan to achieve them. Then we'll work on the plan together. Rinse. Repeat. There will almost certainly be homework. You don't get better at design by working on it 90 or 180 minutes a month (well, you don't get better very quickly if that's all you're doing.) You will absolutely get some portfolio pieces out of it, if that's what you're looking for.

How much does it cost?

We start with a free 30 minute session to discuss your goals to get a better idea of what the lessons will look like. After that:

Weekly

$550/ month

One meeting a week. If you're newer in your design journey, not really sure where to go next or how to set up a practice habit, or just know you need more regular check-ins (like most human people) this is your plan. That's why it's cheaper per lesson.

Every other week

$300/ month

One meeting every other week. This is good for people who already have a strong practice habit in place and really just need some semi-regular check-ins.

Pay-as-you-go

$200/ lesson

Maybe your schedule can't accomodate a regular meeting time. Maybe you have one small thing you want to work on. Pay-as-you-go could be for you.

What this isn't

  • We will not work on things you've been assigned at work. That would certainly violate your NDA.
  • We will not work on getting your startup idea off the ground. If you would like to engage with me for that I offer consulting at very reasonable rates for a designer with my level of experience.
  • I am not a therapist and this isn't intended to replace the work of doing therapy. These are lessons, focused on a set of skills and doing guided practice to improve them.
  • This is not formal mentorship, it's more like tutoring. Unlike mentorship there will come a point where we don't have anything more to work on together.
